Misdiagnosis?: Migraine equivalents that affect the basilar artery system can cause imbalance and incoordination. In addition they can can cause confusion, dysarthria - inability to speak coherently, paresthesias of the face, dizziness, nausea, and double vision.  The fact that you pass out warrants further evaluation - is it truly loss of consciousness or simply falling due to incoordination?

Ans: Well you say a migraine. This is a diagnosis. This term seems to be used loosely now a true migraine headache is very painful and truly crippling. In some people no medication is effective. Just have to ride it out. There are good medications today that can be tried

Migraine: If you are having too frequent migraines. You may benefit from taking preventive medications such as beta blockers, topamax, (topiramate) etc.

Several: Topiramate, certain beta blockers(not all penetrate the blood brain barrier) and verapamil are the mainstays to date.

Some antidepressants: Certain antidepressants in low doses are acceptable for migraine prevention.  The tricyclics such as Elavil (amitriptyline) are a particular class that have been used for years.  They work better over a longer period of time and as such should be used primarily under a physician supervision.

Many: If caught early enough Excedrin or alive or Ibuprofen may help.  If these meds do not work then medications like Imitrex (sumatriptan) or other medications in the same class should help.
