i have a question about adult dyslexia. do any employers test you for this before hiring?

No: It is not routine practice to test for dyslexia before hiring. Hopefully if you have it you have had learned how to compensate. I am not aware of any company that tests before hiring.

Try at school: Hopefully, your school will have the ability to evaluate you for this. A teacher you trust is a good place to start. Educators are really better than doctors for this and they may find ways to help you compensate for the challenge. Good luck - you'll find someone to help - keep trying - librarians can be good resources too.

Health professionals: There is no single test to test for dyslexia. Ways to definitively diagnose dyslexia are elusive. Dyslexia is determined by the presence or absence of its various symptoms. Comprehensive testing provides a way of measuring these symptoms. Educational psychologists are adept at diagnosing along with psychiatrists/psychologists.

Dyslexia testing: Dyslexia needs to be diagnosed by a psychologist who is knowledgeable about learning differences.  IQ, academic, and phonological processing will all need to be assessed.

10% of cases of dys-: lexia are caused by visual-perceptual problems, 90% are caused by a brain-based language processing disorder, difficulty associating  phonemes, the smallest units of sound in a language, with particular letters or symbols. Educational psych: There are a variety of testing resources but these may be limited in some areas.The scottish rite hospitals may have a program in your area. Educational psychologists are often available to do the testing but this is labor intensive & can be expensive.Some test on referral by your dr & some accept self referrals. Many insurers do not cover this type of testing or require you to use their source.

Professional eval: Diagnosis requires a trained professional. If there is a nearby university or post-secondary educational institution, you may be able to obtain a free or reduced-fee eval by going through their learning disabilities department.

You have some: Dyslexia is a specific learning disability related to interpreting written language.  Writing letters backwards, difficulty with remembering what was read, and trouble interpreting and summarizing text are also common.  Adhd is a common coexisting condition.

Developmentalist: A doctor specializing in child development is able to test for dyslexia and advice for therapy. Keep away from chiropracters and optometrists who claim they can do this. This is, in fact a sham!

in 80 yr old seniors  when taking the cognitive decline test from mental health services (for signs of dementia), if the patient already has dyslexia would this interfere with the result in causing a false test result in the diagnosing of dementia ?

: Dyslexia might make it difficult for a cognitively impaired senior to accurately complete the testing, but these are screening studies and not as comprehensive or as accurate as a full scale neuropsychological test battery.  Nonetheless, such tests do provide a pathway to further evaluations.  MRI imaging can be very objectifying, and an EEG would likewise help.  A neurologist may be very useful.
