is it normal for a six year olds second top molar to be loose?! it is about to come out. has 6yr molars - looks like that one could be pushing it out? has lost all front teeth and got teeth early as a baby. no trauma he can recall?

: At about the age of six children start to loose the "baby" teeth at the front of the mouth and the first permanant fromt teeth and the first molars start to errupt. The deciduous molars (baby molars) usually are lost a little later and it does sound as though they are ahead of schedule. Please see you dentist and ask them to check and advise you.

Yes: Common behavior. This is common in infants &amp; toddlers. They often use taste &amp; mouthing different textures as they explore the world. Be aware of dog food available to their cruising as they also eat that &amp; bugs or anything else within reach. I  do not assume that fingers in the mouth mean anything significant.

No: Any parent with a one year old with a high fever should call their pediatrician.  While it is controversial regarding some symptoms related to teething, a "high fever" is not one of them.

Not teething: Fever at that age is usually due to some viral illness, not due to teething. If the baby has no other discomfort, eats well, sleeps well, and plays normally, you may see the fever go away in 3 to 5 days. If there are other symptoms, you should consult your pediatrician to make sure he/she does not have a serious infection that needs to be treated.

Teething: Probably, but there many other possibilities.  It is always appropriate to have your child examined by her General Physician or specialist Pediatrician.  Also all children should have their first dental examination with a General Dentist or preferably specialist Pedodontist now.

Washcloth: Try using a washcloth to brush the teeth. I also read about using gauze or muslin with a little toothpaste. I also recommend trying to let the baby hold the toothbrush.  Often the child will try to brush their own teeth.

Keep brushing: If you do not want him to have cavities keep helping him to brush,  using a pleasant flavored tooth paste will make it more appealing to him and easier for you.

Yes : We hope you start when the first one erupts. Delay can lead to lots of fights when you start. However, now is fine. There are many fluoride free baby toothpastes available but you need to look for them. Babies need to be taught to spit out toothpaste to avoid too much fluoride intake. Some will use fluoride toothpaste but the amount would be the size of a grain of rice.
