Not helpful: Topical antibiotics will not penetrate a stye.  The best treatment for a stye is very warm compresses applied for 5 minutes every 2-3 hours while awake.  This almost always gets rid of them.

Accepted Answer

Not effective: Bacitracin, a good antibiotic for open skin wounds, will not penetrate into a stye which is a closed system.  The best treatment is frequent applications of very warm (not hot) pads or washcloth for 4 minutes about 5 times per day.  Although very uncommon, you could develop an allergy to Bacitracin as well.

hi, i'm seeing afterimages while watching tv in a dark room and suddenly when i blink towards a wall i can see the image. i'm 19 years old. i'm seeing afterimages for almost a month and i've been taking a stye medication ointment. is this normal ?

: After images from a bright screen persist when you look away in a dark room is normal, and not concerning.  Why are you using stye ointment at all? it is not necessary.

Stye: Use flannel and luke warm water for hot fermentation of eye . In most cases this is the only thing that's needed for stye .

Little effect: Styes are best treated with frequent applications of very warm wet washcloths.  Antibiotics will not penetrate and will make little difference.  Use the heat at least 5 times per day for 4-5 minutes at a time.

she is on my medical aid. i would rather not visit a gp but do an online consultation.

Compresses ,massage: Do warm compresses and massage as often as possible.  If stye is on upper lid, massage down and massage up for lower lid.  Use Systane lid wipes after compresses and massage twice daily.  Can continue with Sterilid spray to closed lids twice daily.  If no improvement in 2 weeks, call your eye doctor.

Stye: Hi.
Apply a warm compress eg a warm face cloth.
Apply chloramphenicol eye ointment 4 times daily if you have at home.
You will require a script if you go to the pharmacy.
Use an anti inflammatory for the pain /swelling.eg Voltaren or nurofen tablets.
Before using any medication ,ensure that you have no allergies.
See your doctor if there is no improvement as it is best to be examined.

Expired ointment?: Eye preparations have to be discarded after 30 days from day of dispensing regardless of the expiry date on the product. You need to have your sister seen by a doctor or phone one and appropriate treatment recommended by a professional

Warm Compresses: A stye, or chalazion, is an obstructed or infected oil gland of the eyelid. Use of warm compresses (a wash rag soaked in warm water) held over the closed eye for 10 minutes a few times a day will usually help the stye to resolve. Sometimes antibiotic eye ointment and less commonly oral antibiotics can help as well. If the stye has been there chronically (months), surgical drainage may be needed.
