Difficult to swallow: You MUST see your MD at once. It could be something relatively mild. However it can also be the beginning of a bigger problem.

Several reasons: Difficulty swallowing soft or hard foods could be caused by a number of things.  Your primary care physician should be the starting point for evaluation.  If he or she cannot determine the cause, you may be referred to an ENT or gastroenterologist for evaluation.

Clear liquids: If this is a temporary issue such as a throat infection, start with clear liquids first to prevent dehydration then move up to soft foods. If your swallowing issue lasts more than a few days or you are choking on food, see a doctor immediately.

Could be.: There could be residual inflammation in the esophagus or throat from the choking episode.  That being said, if you're not better in another day or two you need to see a local doctor to make sure the choking episode didn't cause anything more long lasting down there.

Pain between: your shoulder blades while swallowing is ESOPHAGEAL until PROVEN otherwise!

See your PCP for a referral....perhaps a barium swallow would be the "easiest" way to begin!

Need evaluation: If your tonsils are sufficiently large enough to interfere with your swallowing foods, they need evaluation by an ENT doc to see if surgery is indicated.  The other concern is that your trouble with swallowing is unrelated to your tonsils and needs further testing.

Hard to tell: Causes of sore throat and cough are many, but they are usually self-limited and get better on their own. If you are not feeling better, please see a doctor to get an evaluation.

Trouble swallowing: Problems with swallowing that are persistent generally warrant a formal evaluation. This would include a barium swallow test and a direct look by endoscopy. Have these been done. Without such tests, your doctors cannot perform an adequate evaluation.
