Neuropathy: Really depends upon where in the back you're talking about. It can be due to  a neuritis which is an inflammation of the nerves. We sometimes see this after someone has had an epidural. Your numbness could also be due to disk or facet disease. Only a proper history and physical exam by your physician can shed light on the subject.

Nerve entrapment: Most likely, your nerve is being irritated by inflammation, or some sort of nerve root entrapment, similar to that found in the condition of "carpal tunnel syndrome."  the median nerve travels through a 'tunnel' through your carpal (wrist) bones and gets irritated, often causing tingling or numbness in your thumb, pointer, middle and half of your ring finger.  Get checked for cts.  Good luck.

Numbness over all 4 extremities could be associated with a peripheral neuropathy, a problem within the neck, a medication reaction, even multiple sclerosis.  Have your doctor assess your symptoms.
