Carpal tunnel: Statistically the most common cause by far is carpal tunnel syndrome in which the median nerve is compress as it passes with 8 tendons trough a "tunnel" bounded by a thick ligament and multiple wrist bones. Other causes include bone spurs , nerve compression in neck, elbow, root of the neck, metabolic-nutritional imbalances. If your hand is weak or clumsy see an orthopedist or neurologist.

Need an Evaluation: You may have arthritis, you may have carpal tunnel syndrome, anyway you need an evaluation to decide the cause. Until you see the rheumatologist you could get a wrist splint at the drugstore to help decrease in pain with motion and swelling

: It is best to go back to your doctor for more comprehensive evaluation, and no longer assume it is carpal tunnel syndrome, but look for other possibilities that may have to do with nutritional deficiencies, heavy metal poisoning or just peripharal vascular problems e.t.c.

Popping: Sounds like some type of impingement of your nerve at either the neck level or along you brachial plexus to your shoulder or arm. Popping causing symptoms should be evaluated.
