how painful is nose cauterization?

Not bad: It dependson what is needed.  If the area on the septum is small, without a real "juicy" blood vessel, i spray the nose with Lidocaine and afrin, (oxymetazoline) and then put little pieces of cotton (cottonoids) with the same med in the nose for 10 minutes.  This numbs pretty well.  If I have to use electrical cautery, I do this and then inject local.  This smarts a little.  Then the cautery rarely hurts.

after cauterization yesterday, how likely is it that my nose will bleed on-board a plane flight tomorrow?

Use saline gel: After cautery you are likely to have the equivalent of a scab on the inside of your nose where the heat was applied.  Healing of a cautery site occurs best in a moist environment as moisture prevents premature separation of the scab (bleeding). Airplanes have low humidity (moisture) and can dry the nose out. Avoid Aspirin and use a saline gel product such as ayr. It is easy to use while traveling.

Nose cautery: After nasal cautery, you really want to let the nose heal.  Try to avoid blowing your nose for 2-3 days, longer if more bleeding stirs up after cautery.  Keep the nose moist with saline, too.  This facilitates the healing if the lining of the nose after treatment.  You can also prevent drying of the nose by putting a little vaseline just inside the openings if the nose.

Usually: just pinching the tip portion of you nose for a few minutes will stop it

Sealing the vessel: Nosebleeds are caused by a bleeding blood vessel or several small vessels, usually on the middle wall of one nostril.  Cauterization means using heat, electricity or a chemical to essentially burn the edges of the vessel and seal it closed so blood won't leak anymore.

Yes: I routinely recommend Afrin for three days after nasal cautery.  Also use saline for crusting, saline gel to coat the nasal musosa and no vigorous nose blowing.

Variable: Pain is relative and what one person says is a slight twinge may be quite painful for another. That said, i usually apply a topical anesthetic first. This tends to make the procedure more comfortable.

Probably: developed new blood vessels , ( vascular plexus ) go back to the doctor , don't allow to have  ' dozen severe nose bleeds '  Cauterization is a simple safe procedure and don't worry

ENT: An ear, nose & throat (ENT) specialist is whom you'd be looking for. That's assuming the nosebleeds aren't being caused by a problem with your blood's ability to clot. Seeing your primary care physician first is probably the best idea.
