With that said, your total t sounds pretty low, which could negatively impact energy, mood, cognition, bone strength, muscle mass, sex drive, heart disease risk etc. However, before embarking on t replacement, need to figure out cause eg hemochromatosis, pituitary adenoma, h/o mumps orchitis, etc. Also need to decide upon fertilit.

YES: When a man takes testosterone alone the brain will tell your testicles they don't have to work any more. They can atrophy, drop  your sperm count to 0 and cause dry ejaculations. Furthermore, prescription topical testosterone are grossly overpriced, and diluted. They require larger surface ares to apply which can elevate Dht levels causing hair loss. I prefer HCG plus compounded testosterone.

If your testosterone is low there are many available treatments from low cost to a very high cost. The low cost is an injection which some don't like, but it is most often better for you than the more expensive ones.

Less Than 300ng/dL : 1) a healthy 40 y/o male is expected to have a total testosterone level between 450-900 ng/dl {mean of 667 ng/dl}.

2) the consensus of the endocrine society states that 300 ng/dl is the cut-off for the diagnosis of hypogonadism {assuming there are no other associated lab abnormalities}

3} i recommend you seek the advice and continue your workup with an endocrinologist.
