how long will i be out of sports with either a grade 2 or 3 ankle sprain and two nondisplaced fibula fractures (i hurt my ankle 4wks ago; i'm 17 yrs)?

Minimally 12 weeks: Without a complete history of your injury and sports activity, the non-displaced fractures will take a minimum of 6-8 weeks to heal (assuming there are no complications in healing) and in general soft tissue injuries such as the an ankle sprain will be longer about 12 weeks (= 3 months).  Again, that is assuming that you are compliant with treatment regimen prescribed by your doctor.

nondisplaced distal fibula fracture.  been in cast for 2 weeks.  new cast tomorrow.  can i take this cast off for tonight to wash?

Don't remove : It is best to not remove the cast put on by the doctor. They can wipe you leg down when they change out you cast. If you truly have a non displaced fibular fracture, you may be eligible for a fracture boot. These can be removed for showers or bathing. Check with your treating provider.

Fibula fracture : Generally speaking no displaced fractures can be casted for 4-6 weeks. If the fracture is however noted to be unstable or in combination with other injuries that would render instability, surgery may be indicated.

No: Fibula fractures are pretty common but rarely do they lead to amputation.  If amputation is being considered, it is probably for some other diagnosis--such as very poor blood supply to the leg.

how much time would it take to recover from a lower 1/3 fibula fracture?

Depends: The location of the fracture is important to when you will be able to go back to activities.  The closer to your "ankle" the fracture is the more restrictions you will have.  On average bone heals in about 2-3 months everything else being equal.  If you smoke or use any nicotine products that can almost double the time it takes for the fracture to heal.

Possible but unlikel: Most fractures will heal with stabilization, casting, and occasionally surgery. The fibula is the smaller bone of the lower leg.
Unless there are other comorbid conditions: pvd, diabetes, infection, amputation would be an unlikely result.

Xray: It's best to get an x-ray. If you are no longer having pain, it's likely well on its way to being healed.

Distal fibula: Yes.  Generally the distal fibula has a good blood supply and heals reliably well.  Metabolic problems and lack of immobilization can lead to non-union of a distal fibula fracture.

how long will i have a hard cast for a non-displaced fibula fracture?

Accepted Answer

It depends: It takes 8 weeks for bone to heal in a healthy person who does not smoke. A non-displaced fracture could be put into a cast or a walking boot, depending how stable it is. A conservative physician would have you in one for 6 to 8 weeks. More aggressive would be for 2 to 4 week and then transition to a boot when an xray shows good callus formation at the fracture site.
