Not unusual.: The femur is the longest and strongest bone we have. A comminuted fracture means this bone was broken into three or more pieces and needed to be repaired with rod, screws etc. To hold the pieces together. This is considered a major break, and a lot of force is required to break the bone this way. It takes months to recover; pain 6-7 weeks out would be typical.

I never : Understood that buddy splinting idea. The big toe and second toe act differently and I never thought that to be a good idea. I would wrap each one individually and wear a surgical shoe. If walking hurts, use crutches. Without seeing the films hard to advise anything else besides apply Ice.

Stable: What you have described sounds like a stable fracture, but you really need to see a physician for evaluation and close follow-up to confirm whether the fractures are stable or not.  Having multiple fractures as you have described is certainly going to be painful, but pain does not necessarily mean instability.
