what do i do for thumb joint discomfort?

RICE: Rest, immobilization, cold and exersice. Thumb joint pain, especially at the base, is usually arthritis. I start with a brace and oral steroids and if pain persists, injections and therapy follow. If i can't relieve the pain and x-rays show arthritis, i will procede with arthroplasty. Surgery consists of removing the arthritic bone and replacing it with tendon.

Injury: You are most likely causing a localized acute arthritis every time you pop your joint.  I would certainly refrain from intentionally doing this and if it happens, apply ice, take Ibuprofen (if you can) and elevate it.  See your doctor if concern.

Arthritis: Chronic pain in the mp joint if the thumb is most likely caused by degeneration of the joint surfaced causing inflammation and pain. This could be from a remote injury that damaged the cartilage or chronic overuse.

Joint cracking: Cracking sounds occur when a-bubbles form in joints as they are pulled apart, b-Rapid stretching of ligaments, and other possible etiologies.  Old wive's tale of popping the joints, especially knuckles, leads to arthritis or other joint problems. However, medical research has so far failed to conclusively demonstrate any connection between knuckle cracking and long-term joint problems.

why can't my thumb joint be surgically cleaned out?

Accepted Answer

Technically it can: But it is usually of little benefit, because of the small size of the thumb joints.  Depends on which joint as well.  If you have pain or DJD in your basal thumb joint or cmc joint it can be cleaned out with a procedure called a trapezium resection and suspensionplasty.  Great surgery 97-99% success rate.  The other thumb joints can either be fused, but this sig. Decreases thumb function.

An ip Jtlw fusion: at the thumb tip or an MP joint fusion at the large knuckle typically cannot be taken down and made to move. However if you have had a fusion at the base of the thumb or what is called the CMC joint then at times that fusion and be removed and the  thumb stabilized with some type of tendon transfer or inter-position and motion can be restored partially. There are many variables to consider first.

Trigger finger?: Most likely causes of lack of thumb motion are trigger thumb, tendon rupture or joint injury. Assume lower means ip joint , you need to see a hand surgeon.
