Need more info: Sometimes it's ok to observe a lung nodule which might be an infection or a benign condition that doesn't require surgery. But if this is definitely a carcinoid it could spread, which is why surgery was recommended. Vats is lung surgery through smaller incisions with video instruments, and is better tolerated. But all lung surgery is major, and needs expert surgeons and anesthesiologists.

Soooo...: Nodule is not a diagnosis.  It is a description of a finding on a study.  Really need to know what kind of nodule.  There are several types of nodules that are completely benign.  He would not have told you all was well unless i really was.  Doctors are generally very conservative.  If her doc said not to worry why do you continue to worry? Maybe you should talk to them again.

Depends On Cause: There are solitary  and multiple pulmonary nodules.  Either one could be malignant, but still curable.  They maybe due to infections, inflammatory conditions, developmental conditions or exposure to toxic dust, etc.  Some of these can be treated and cured. Others may be stable or progressive and not curable.  The cause needs to be determined with your physician's help.

What does it look like on the ct, have you had a pet scan.  I could go on for a while, but it sounds like your doc wants a second opinion.  We don't have the benefit of all that information and more to answer your question.

Need to follow up!: It is important to note the shape of these nodules.  If the edges are irregular or " spiculated" that is more worrisome.  Also, the pattern of calcifications is important as well.  These nodules should be followed for stability for 2 years.  If they change or enlarge, they should be biopsied or evaluated for malignancy.  Follow the recommendations of the reading radiologist, or get 2nd opinion.
