Maybe: Diphenhydramine (benedryl) is not a sleep aid, but an antihistamine. If allergy therapy is warranted and the secondary drowsiness helps to take the edge off, then improved sleep may be achieved. However, some folks excrete benedryl more slowly, and drowsiness may extend through the next morning and be detrimental to alertness. Also, bladder dysfunction occurs in a few patients.

i'm one of the rare people who have an adverse reaction to diphenhydramine, it makes me anxious and shaky. is there any otc sleep aid other than melatonin that does not contain diphenhydramine?

Not known: Although other OTC antihistamines may cause some drowsiness, the effect/side effect profiles are quite different. I am not aware of any OTC med used.   By the way, I just saw a patient last week having the same reactions to Benadryl (diphenhydramine).

Drug duplication: I assume you're referring to Wal-Som brand of diphenhydramine (https://www.drugs.com/otc/119159/wal-som.html) which is often used for its sedative properties. In actuality, diphenhydramine is an antihistamine in same class as fexofenadine, active ingredient of Allegra (and Allegra-D) so there's duplication of drugs and potentially their effects. Yes, you may.: Drugs make lose in potency over time, but do not become dangerous in pill form if outdated for only a few months to a year. It is likely to still be good. Best wishes.

The choice is yours.: I will make some natural remedy suggestions: valerian root, chamomile and melatonin.  If those aren't available to you - benardryl is easy to get.  Make sure you are using excellent sleep  hygiene. Retire ; rise same time each day. Keep bedroom dark ; cool ; use only for sex ; sleep. Turn off tv. No naps. Exercise regularly but not in late evening. No caffeine for 6 hrs ; no alcohol or tobacco &gt;.

It may be harmful: It may be harmful to take 200mg of diphenhydramine a night, since the recommended dose is 25-50mg a night.  That means it is time to work with one&#x27;s primary care doctor to see what the sleeping problem is all about.  The doctor may refer one to a sleep doctor or other specialist as needed.

It is a chronic pain syndrome: The major issues in fibromyalgia is poor sleep, poor exercise, poor control stress and psychological issues. Some of these are up to you and some are medications. Your assessment should be able to help process these options.

See you doctor.: There are other sleep aids out there, that could help you without the dreams.  Even better, there are healthy sleeping habits termed sleep hygiene, where by changing simple habits, you could improve your sleep/ rest experience.  Your doctor can help.

There is no "best"..: The best one is one that works for you and doesn't cause any problems. The most common over the counter sleep aids have diphenhydramine, and this is in Benadryl and unisom. Nyquil has a sleep medicine (zzquil) that also has diphenhydramine, but it also has alcohol.  You could also try melatonin is something you can buy in the store that can help with sleep.

i have recently noticed a lot of bruising. i was taking a night time sleep aid regularly, and thought that might be contributing, so i scaled back. i also don't eat a lot of meat but have a decently well balanced diet. what else can i do?

Accepted Answer

Evaluation needed: Excessive bruising can be caused by problems with platelet function (made much worse by aspirin or other NSAIDs like ibuprofen), or with clotting factor abnormalities, or by other disorders of the connective tissue. A reaction to certain medications can trigger a more  serious problem that leads to low platelets. Best to get checked by a doctor.
