Rash: The patch in itself can cause contact dermatitis , if you are smoking then all you re doing is increasing your nicotine in your body. To note nicotine patches and the possibility to quit smoking are not very effective other methods are available.

None I'm aware of.: No medication or treatment is risk-free; but in my humble opinion, the risk you take by using nicoderm (nicotine patch) patch pales in comparison to the risk you would take by continuing to smoke.

Yes: The nicotine patch works by replacing the nicotine from tobacco with a constant dose of nicotine administered through the skin by the patch.  The side effects of the nicotine patch are the same as the side effects of any other method of using nicotine, except the effects are usually less because the dose is constant rather than the burst that occurs with smoking.

Timed release: Putting the patch on your skin will release the medicine into your skin and then the rest of the body over time.  It is not meant to be as immediate or potent as a cigarette, but to provide steady and lower doses of the drug until you wean off of nicotine.

Niether: Both are nicotine replacement. Either can substitute for the nicotine in cigarettes. I recommend trying with out nicotine replacement, because at some point you will have to go through the withdrawal. It is really not that bad, and cravings only last 2-5 mins. Distract yrself for that long w chewing on carrots or celery, deep breathing, meditation, running around the block, etc. Each time it hits.
