Usually...: The symptoms of neuropathy regardless of cause can be treated with medications which work to calm the nerve endings that are irritated and responsible for the pain.  If, upon evaluation a cause  is found that can be corrected, the doctor will proceed accordingly.  Most of the time, however, regardless of cause, the medication is needed.

OK to question diag.: Peripheral neuropathy is a not uncommon problem, and is most often associated with diabetes in usa.  Numbness, tingling, pain, can be experienced over the toes or fingertips initially.  Sensory loss and weakness may also be acquired from spinal cord and brain problems, but pattern very different.  Sounds like a second opinion is in order here, and seems you need to know causation.  Good luck.

Many things: Maintain ideal body weight (bmi 18-24), avoid alcohol, treat any underlying condition that is causing the neuropathy (diabetes, thyroid condition, rheumatoid arthritis, emphysema/copd, sleep apnea), take a b complex vitamin once daily, and check your feet daily for sores.  Neuropathy may cause pain, numbness, tingling, imbalance, & weakness; only rare & severe types of neuropathy cause disability.

Give me the reason: Best treatment for neuropathy will stem out of its cause. If diabetic, adequate diabetes control is paramount. Other meds may be lyrica, (pregabalin) cymbalta, neurontin, tricyclics. If slipped lumbar disc, treat that first, either conservatively or surgically. B12 deficiency will need to be replenished and so on.
