does anyone know what the drug neo-synephrine does?

Neo-synehrine: Neosynephrine (phenylephrine) constricts blood vessels.  Given intravenously, it raises blood pressure and is used to treat low blood pressure or shock. Given topically or in small doses orally, it constricts the vessels in the nose (nasal mucosa) which opens breathing passages.

Heart effects: Symptoms of Neo-Synephrine overdose include rapid heart rate, irregular heart rate, palpitations, anxiety, hallucinations, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, vomiting & sweating. Your nose may sting a lot. Not everyone gets all of these symptoms. Neo-synephrine is a highly addictive drug & should not be used routinely. There are better medications for treating your chronic symptoms. See your doctor.

Neo-synephrine: All topical nasal decongestants (afrin, Vicks inhaler, 4-way, neosynephrine etc.) if used daily can result in a form of addiction called rhinitis medicomentosa. This problem develops when the nasal tissues develop a resistance to the effects of the spray and more frequent use is needed to keep the nose open. Avoid using these products for more than 2 days without time away from them (3-4 days).

Quick answer: No.  It relieves symptoms.  Unfortuantely continued use or use in the wrong person (i.e. With high blood pressure) could cause lots of other problems.

No: Synephrine is an amphetamine precursor used for weight loss. Neosynephrine (phenylephrine) (phenylehphrine) constricts blood vessels and is used as a decongestant when applied topically to the nosal mucosa or orally in pharmacologic doses

Mucinex (guaifenesin): Mucinex (guaifenesin) may be better otc choice for stuffiness and to help control postnasal drip. Lasts 12 hours and available in drug store or supermarket.

Accepted Answer

Yes: The use of this drug which constricts blood vessels may eventually lead to rebound. That is, the blood vessels in the lateral wall of the nose will actually produce more congestion.  Neo-synephrine should be used for a maximum of 2-3 days.  It is very important to know if the congestion is the result of a viral infection or nasal allergy or more seriously, nasal polyps.  Get a diagnosis.

Several options: It all depends on the location and severity of your disease. You also need blood work and a PPD (TB) test before certain meds can be used. Sometimes you may need high dose steroids depending on the severity of the disease. Please discuss with your GI doc.

Immune suppression: 1. 5-asa medications (sulfasalazine, asacol, (mesalamine) pentasa) may take the edge of symptoms, they do not adequately treat crohn's disease. 
2. Steroids work, but are only useful for short course because of side effects.
3. Azathioprine (imuran), 6-mp, Methotrexate are often effective, and reduce the need for steroids
4. Remicade, Humira are very effective at treating fistulas or severe crohn's.
