The lymph nodes "taste" the lymph to see if anything bad is there like bacteria, viruses, cancers, etc. When it detects a problem, it alerts the immune system by enlarging in response. Prolonged enlargement should be biopsied.  If no problem, they shrink.

Find Reason: You need to see your doctor or dentist to find out. If they are swollen, then they are collecting bacteria.  Where do you have an infection that is feeding them?  Stop the infection.

Could be: Lymph nodes are all over the body.  You cannot feel most of them but the head and neck area have many which can be felt and that shallow pocket above your collarbone is one area where they are appreciated.  There are, however, other causes for swelling and depending upon your symptoms, if this doesn't go away see your doctor.

Not really: Lymph node swelling can not go away in one day..So it has to be something else. You should go and show it to your pcp and find out if there is anything visible or palpable in your neck. If it is real he/she will be able to detect it, verify it and treat the problem.

The size may vary: As a rule, the larger , the more and the harder the nodes are, the more chances of them to be malignant. But anything is possible so don't rely on the size alone. Only a biopsy can confirm a diagnosis of lymphoma. Fever. Night sweats and weight loss indicate a more advanced stage. Take care!

neck on r/side keeps swelling up , mri showed an inlarged lymph node , all other scans were normal , had for 3 months now ... what could it be ?

If you have: persistent swollen lymph nodes on one side of your neck only , chances are its from an infection ( skin most likely source  ESPECIALLY THE SCALP!!))  If this persists without a defined source lymph node biopsy might be the next step!

Lymph node: Neck masses are generally infectious, inflammatory, congenital or neoplastic. Those &lt; 1 cm which are oval and mobile are usually lymph nodes.   These may be associated with a recent or past infection.  Persistent neck mass should be evaluated by an otolaryngologist (ENT)

Get it checked!: Swollen lymph nodes can be secondary to a viral or bacterial infection or other sources of inflammation, 0.  Of greatest concern (admittedly unlikely) is cancer or lymphoma.  While it is not likely, it is scary and should be checked.
