Recently, a new technique was introduced to create an internal wrap via natural orifice surgery;  this is called transoral incisionless fundplication (tif).

Use it sparingly: Omeprazole is safe used occasionally but it is associated with problems when taken long term. This type of drug is associated with risks of pneumonia, malabsorption of nutrients and bone density loss. If you can figure out natural ways to avoid the reflux it would be best. If you only use the omeprazole occasionally it should be fine.

Small meals: Small frequent meals, low in fat and fried foods- cause they delay stomach emptying. Foods that dont contain caffeine such as coffee and tea and dark chocolate would be helpful since these products also increase acid production in the stomach. If overweight, losing weight can decrease the pressure on the abdomen that is contributing to reflex.

Yes: There are now multiple and very potent medications available over the counter for acid reflux. Antacids have always been available and now both h2 blockers such as Zantac (ranitidine) or Pepcid are available. We can also purchase Prevacid and Prilosec over the counter, which are more powerful and longer lasting acid reducing medications.

Options: Treatment options include reducing stress, a variety of dietary changes, some lifestyle changes, a variety of medications, and even endoscopic or surgical procedures. Lose weight. Elevate head of bed on blocks. Use otc acid blockers for relief (h2's: tagamet, zantac, (ranitidine) pepcid; ppi's: prilosec, prevacid, zegerid). See a GI doctor if persistent.

Yes: The 3 main classes are proton pump inhibitiors (prilosec, etc), h2 blockers (zantac, pepcid, (famotidine) etc) and anti-acids (tums, mylanta, etc).  They are listed in order of effectiveness.

It may.: if symptoms of GERD are not daily at this time, I would try to treat it by avoiding particular foods which bring it on, such as tomatoes, onions, orange juice, and  chocolate. Avoid caffeine and alcohol, and stop smoking if you do. You may want to tilt the head of your bed. Use OTC antacids like Tums (calcium carbonate) whenever you have heartburn. If that's more than three times a week, see your doctor. Good luck.

: Antacids such as mylanta,zantac,prilosec (all are no OTC). Avoid eating late. You may need to sleep with a few pillows to elevate your head. The sphincter that helps block digestive fluid from going from the stomach to the esophagus is too relaxed.
