Intolerance: Intolerance NOT allergy. The symptoms you describe are all classic signs of an intolerance to caffeine. It seems like you are more sensitive than most to its effects. Care about GERD: That's why there's acid blockers! but if not controlled exposure of stomach contents to your esophagus can lead to progressive erosions, ulcers, strictures (that get narrower as the scar tissue involved contracts) that trap food, barrett's esophagus (intestinalized tissue), & ultimately esophageal adenocarcinoma. Also may see laryngitis, airway irritability, asthma, chronic sinusitis, ear clicking.

If you don't cut it: out completely I would recommend that you not drink carbonated sodas at least 2 hours before bedtime if you have GERD.

Some basics: Nicotine &amp; caffeine are chemicals that prevent the circular muscle controlling the stomach entrance from closing tightly thus allowing more reflux.Betaine hcl has no qualities I find helpful. Pepsin as a protease might help digestion but would offer nothing to treat reflux. You can consume a normal diet with reflux, but many avoid acidic food/drink out of caution.

GERD ; Caffeine: Yes. Of course. Caffeine is one of the products that causes the esophageal sphincter to be loose or more open allowing more acid to wash up into the esophagus.

my gerd is uncontrolled with aciphex (rabeprazole) 20mg qd + axid 150mg bid. i don't drink caffeine or alcohol. what can i do for gerd?

GERD tx: Glad you're aware of avoiding alcohol and caffeine. Remember caffeine is in: coffee, tea, soda, chocolate. Other triggers: mint (gum, candy, leaves), citrus (ex. Orange juice, tomato sauce, etc), and in some people spicy food. If you're overweight, wt loss can help. Avoid laying down <2hrs after eating. Control stress if you're stressed. If these measures don't help talk to your doc re: other tx.

have pvcs - md said >4, 000/day. v. uncomfortable! prescription prevacid (lansoprazole). i d/c sudafed, reduced caffeine. trying to reduce gerd & stress. any other suggestions?

Find the cause.: To determine the treatment, one must always ask, "what's the underlying cause?"  in this instance, one should seek an exam (careful history, physical exam, ekg, chest x-rays and blood tests to fill in the total picture.  Hypertension, valve problems, coronary heart disease, thyroid disease and drugs are all high on the list of factors contributing to premature ventricular contractions.

Yes indeed: Yes they could have caused this. That said, seems like this is unusual for you so it should subside. Chronic heartburn symptoms warrant intervention.

Gradually : The best approach is  to very gradually reduce the amount of caffeine  each day. This can be done by either drinking less caffeinated coffee, diluting the caffeinated coffee or gradually switching to decaffeinated coffee. There should be a recent medical  evaluation to be sure that you are not  needing caffeine because of fatigue. If there is  depression a mental health evaluation is in order.
