Accepted Answer

None: There are no supplements that are effective for weight loss so I don't recommend any for my patients.  Focus on changing your diet and increasing your exercise.  Read a book called "Dr. A's Habits of Health" by Dr. Wayne Scott Anderson.  Very informative, thorough and easy to understand book.

is it okay to take plexus slim(a dietary supplement,) while taking  metoprolol extended release 25mg? i take metoprolol to control heart palpitations.

Accepted Answer

Depends: If the supplement doesn't contain any stimulants it should be ok to take without causing palpitations or interactions with metoprolol. You can ask your pharmacist to review the ingredients in the product and advise you.

Barrenwort:  I didn't see any literature about Horny Goat/  Barrenwort causing false positives on Urine drug screens.

Use is spending $$$$: Gelatin is hydrolyzed collagen derived from useless animal parts  including skin , sold  by every  health gurus , for arthritis , osteoporosis , etc with no valid scientific proof , unknowingly we all eating every day in various ways from medication capsules, variety of  foods , jello . Jam etc used to keep the consistency of the food  product.

NO REAL PROBLEM: Dietary supplements should be fine with your tysabri (natalizumab).

i take dietary supplements to help in weight loss. current i'm overweight, and use these supplements quite regularly. and today i noticed a change in energy. should i continue use? i've been taking a product called garcia cambogia. is this safe?

: Weight loss supplements perform quite poorly for weight loss in clinical trials. It is impossible to know whether the Garcinia product you are using is safe without knowledge of the dose, the associated ingredients within the product, or the manufacturing process. Furthermore, there may be interactions with your other pharmaceuticals. It would be ideal to discuss the product with your PCP.

Not necessarily: There often are interactions between herbals and conventional medications. The interactions may increase the side effects and/or interfere with the action of prescribed medication. Yes: If you definatively feel the supplements are causing your discharge then stopping them would be a good idea.  Get the discharge evaluated to assure you need no further treatment.

Who knows?: Why are you taking two supplements that you don't know what's in them, why you are taking them, how to judge whether they're helping you, what the potential side effects and interactions are -- and, that won't do you any good except spend your money needlessly? Don't get your medical information from friends, tv and the internet. Stay away from junk you don't need and could harm you.

Accepted Answer

Expired medications: Dietary supplements that have an expiration date on them should be discarded. The chemical nature of any medication or supplement can change over time including the additives to that product.
