One side sore throat: Sore throat and throat pain can be caused by various reasons. Viral or bacterial infections, reflux disease are a few. Do you have additional symptoms like fever, chills, voice change? How long has your throat been hurting for? Do you smoke? Are you exposed to dust, smoke or fumes in your job? These factors affect what your doctor thinks the most likely cause is and how best to treat it.

Swollen lymph nodes: Is likely what you are talking about.  It likely indicates an infection, viral or bacterial.  See you doctor who may prescribe antibiotics if it is bacterial.

Lymph nodes: Very likely they are lymph nodes.  These glands are the regional headquarters of the soldiers of your immune system when they are fighting an infection.  They tend to enlarge when there is an increased demand of fighter cells in the affected body part.  Head and throat infections tend to cause lymph node enlargement in the neck region.

my right side of my throat / neck, ear & face hurt. my scalp & skin are sore to touch on that side. i have fibromyalgia & tmjd . . should i be concern?

Pain: Any pain is worthy of concern.  The 3 red flags are pain/bleeding/swelling, any one of which deserves physical examination.  See both your Dentist and your Physician as you may have concurrent overlapping problems.

Probably see your MD: Usually infections such as viruses or tonsillitis involve BOTH sides of your throat.  If this has been going on for more than 2-3 weeks, you really should have a doctor examine your throat. This is especially true if you use any tobacco products.  It may be something simple, but a sore throat on one side that lasts more than a couple weeks needs to be checked out with an exam.

Get eval: For significantly sore throat w swollen tonsils / lymph nodes – see physician ; get a strep throat test ; culture. Antibiotics are imperative for strep throat.  Try saltwater gargles. Mix tsp of salt in 8 oz of warm water – gargle w this several times/day. You can gargle w aloe vera juice a couple of times per day. A mix of chamomile tea w honey ; a small amt of lemon juice helps.

Get checked: Many possibilities - could be tonsil infection, cervical adenitis (neck gland infection), or referred pain from an ear problem or issue in the salivary glands.  May also be a muscular or nerve problem in the neck itself.  Plus many others.  Needs doctor examination to sort out the possibilities and this should be done urgently if fevers, limb weakness or breathing or swallowing problems.

Infection: Is the most common reason for tender swollen glands in neck.Some of the infections require antibiotics ( strep throat, tooth or gum infection/ abscess) and some do not ( mononucleosis ).Sounds like its time to see your doctor.
