my period ended on wednesday but i'm still bleeding it's a brown color. why is this happening?

Bleeding: When you cut your finger in the kitchen, the bleeding is initially bright red, then darker red, then a brown scab. This is because of the oxidation of the iron in hemoglobin. The brown discharge, or old blood, that you are seeing is occurring because of the transit time from your cervix to the outside world. During the transit the iron is oxidized and therefore becomes brown in color.

See your GYN: If you have uncontrolled bleeding  and especially around age of menopause - it is best to see gyn for evaluation. Deoends on your medical history and medication too. Time to see your doc.

Not normal: It is not normal and if you are having heavy bleeding consult your gynecologist to find why you are bleeding.

It may or may : not stop completely in day or two. Some people are OK with sex, and light bleeding, others may not feel comfortable with any flow at all.

Don't worry: Starting COCPs on the first day of the menstrual cycle confers the maximum contraceptive benefit, and you don't need to worry about using a backup method of contraception. Occasional: break-thru bleeding is normal, if recurs often, a change in your contraceptive medication may be needed, if so discuss with your doctor. Effectiveness of the contraceptive is not decreased, with break-thru bleeding.
