Bleeding: When you cut your finger in the kitchen, the bleeding is initially bright red, then darker red, then a brown scab. This is because of the oxidation of the iron in hemoglobin. The brown discharge, or old blood, that you are seeing is occurring because of the transit time from your cervix to the outside world. During the transit the iron is oxidized and therefore becomes brown in color.
