Not likely: If it just hurts when you bend it, a trip to the er is probably not necessary. If you dislocated it or had large amounts of redness and swelling and a fever, then yes. If it just hurts when you bend it or walk on it, i would recommend just waiting and seeing you primary care doc or going to urgent care doc tomorrow (both will be much cheaper and just as effective for this issue).I hope this helps!

Patella: Was there trauma? If not, could be from mild arthritis behind your knee cap; also could be from tight muscles, around knee (ie quadriceps, hip flexors, hamstrings) if it persists i would get evaluated by an orthopedist.

You need an evaluate: This could be an internal knee problem you need an appropriate evaluation . Is it Muscle , is it a tendon is a bursa, is it joint, or is it Cartlidge. My biggest concern from what you tell me is it could be one of these  - Cartledge would be the one I would be first thinking about
