See details: It is difficult to give a specific answer without being able to examine the finger but it may be tendinitis. If you are concerned have it evaluated.

Paronychia is the: term for an infection that develops along the edge of the fingernail or toenail. Try warm soaks for 15 minutes in a 50% solution of antibacterial soap in water. Do this three or four times a day. Paronychia is usually caused by common skin bacteria entering the skin around the nail that has been damaged by dishwashing, other irritants, or finger sucking. If it does not improve, see your doctor.

Doubtful Fracture: More likely capuslitis or possible dislocation.  Use some over the counter anti inflammitory medications and if does not feel better see an orthopod for evaluation.

middle finger hurts to bend & straighten tender from middle knuckle to center of palm. when resting it stiffens & its swollen. don't remember injuring it. woke up to the pain 2 days ago. what could it be & what should i do?

: Tendinitis from over use injury would be my first guess.  Review wt yo do with that finger. Show and discuss with your Dr. or koi out VPC and consult with us.

Infection? Gout?: Time to look for other things that may not be seen on an xray.  Your doctor was probably looking for any small fracture that could be causing the pain.  Have you had any fevers? Redness?  Recent cuts or abrasions around the finger?  Consider that your symptoms may be from an infection.   Gout is another possibility.  Make sure you followup with your doctor and good luck!

Pinky pain: An xray would reliable tell if something is fractured.  Small swollen bruised finger is a good indication that something may be fractured.

Initially yes: If your problem is acute ice is the way to go you might also try advil (ibuprofen) r naprosin 
after 24hrs heat may help
if pain persist.... See your hand surgeon.
