Dry eyes?: You can think of excessive tearing as a sink that is overflowing.  It is either that the faucet is on too strong, or the drain is clogged.  If your tear drain is open, then you are making too much tears -- a sign of dry eyes.  Your eye is trying to 'wash' away damage on the surface of your eye caused by the dryness.  Try otc artificial tears 4x/day to see if it helps.

Abrasion: Probably your babys finger scratched off a little of the surface epithelium of your cornea, which can lead to pain and tearing.  If you have some lubricating drops you can apply those to comfort the eye.  If it still bothers you by tomorrow, especially if the eye is red or the vision is diminished, then you should have your ophthalmologist.See you.

Dry eyes: Depending on where you live, the most likely reason why you tear is dry eye syndrome.  The extra tears are your body's response to the dryness.  The first step is to use artificial tears for the dryness.  Other options include punctal plugs, restasis.  If the tearing is not improved with artificial tears, you should see your eye md to make sure the tearing is not due to another condition.

Normal: The tears drain through openings in both the upper and lower lids that are found near the nose.  If you turn your head to the side, the tears have no option other than to run out the side of the eye since they are flowing away from the drains.
