Breastfeeding Engorg: First  review what is going on with latch and positioning. Of your baby engorgement can increase if you are doing extra breast expression to relieve the engorgement. Also if baby is "tip" feeding- tip of nipple- breasts get stimulation to letdown milk but not adequate emptying of breast. Then look at frequency of feeds and condition of nipples. With these 3 the breastfeeding will be less painful.

It : It is hard to diagnose obviously, but the most common problem is a poor or incorrect latch.  This usually results in nipple area pain during and after feeding.  Correct latching may have discomfort for a few seconds, but then settles down.  If incorrect, nipple pain can persist during and after feeding.  Nipples can become cracked or bleed, and this can make it worse.  #2-engorgement can also cause breast pain.  If you baby is not cleaning out your breasts or you aren't feeding enough, the breasts can become overfull and cause discomfort.  Increasing feeding frequency or pumping can temporarily alleviate this.    #3-some moms can develop fungal infections on their breasts that need to be treated by a doctor with antifungal medication.  #4-finally, mastitis is an infection of the breast that can result in red, warm, painful breast with fevers/chills, etc.   This must be treated with antibiotics and is an urgent issue to be seen by your doctor.   
 One note, if you exclusively breastfeed, you should talk to your doctor about vitamin d supplementation for yourself and the baby.

However see a health care professional to figure this out;
 It could be a Hormonal imbalance problem that needs to be diagnosed and treated;

Three basic plans: Cold turkey: bind yourself & send baby to others to bottle feed until they will for you.(painful & frustrating for both but some do ok.) gradual: drop a feeding every day or two, using bottle instead. At some point body drops supply & you can accelerate coming off. (less pain) some also use baby to soften a tense breast but follow with a bottle.This tells the breast to slow production.

Breastfeeding: Definitely a personal choice.  Breastfeeding is by far the best way to feed your newborn. It also provides benefits to you and bonding. Is it bad not to breastfeed? No. Are there bad things that will happen?  No.  Is it better to breastfeed?  Yes. But, it has to be your choice and your commitment.

Lactation : This is an old remedy. 
Reduce fluid intake, apply cabbage leaves directly to the breast (cover them).
Use panado for pain.
If there is no response in 3days ,consult with your doctor( will possibly prescribe Ovral..antiinflammatory...antibiotic)

Breast pain: Breast feeding up to 4 months ago should not have any relationship to breast pain now. Engorgement, mastitis and blocked milk duct(s) can all cause breast pain when it occurs while a woman is nursing or shortly after the weaning process. Breast pain after such a long interval  requires examination by your physician.

Painful breastfeed: When your baby is not able to empty the milk in the sinuses and ducts of the breast, 
the milk collection will cause distention of the breast in the form of lumps. Stopping to breastfeed will even cause infection.  Emptying the retained milk by teaching the baby to correctly latch and manual or electrical pumping will relieve the situation. The baby will not be harmed by the infected milk.

what are all the possible causes of breast soreness when breastfeeding? i don't want to stop.

Frequency, mastitis.: Soreness might be due to doing it too long, or from use of a pump.  But apparently the main issue is mastitis, or inflammation of the breasts.  This can be from not improper technique of breastfeeding, or from not doing it early enough.  Puerperal mastitis can be from infectious inflammation and abscess caused by pathogens like staph. Aureus, strep., and e. Coli.  Feeding more often can even help.
