Accepted Answer

Sometimes: If you have not received a paralytic agent, you could be breathing on your own during general anesthesia. If paralysed, you might not be able to more anything.

is it normal to have muscle contractions when waking up from anesthesia?

Accepted Answer

Not unusual: Some patients wake up from general anesthesia with significant shivering. It may be caused by being cold - patient's can get cold fairly quickly if not kept covered (and sometimes warmed with special heated blankets). Warm patients can also shiver. It is thought to be caused by the different parts of the brain and spinal cord "waking up" at different rates. Meperidine (demerol) may help.

if you go under general anesthesia , without a muscle relaxer.. would you still need an artificial airway ?

It is possible: Anytime somone undergoes general anesthesia, there is a moderate to high probability that the airway can become compromised requiring artificial ventilation.  Some procedures can be done under moderate sedation in which the airway reflexes are usually preserved, but full general anesthesia usually requires some form of airway management

why don't your muscles fully relax when given general anesthesia? the dr said he had a hard time opening my mouth for the tube for last surgery

Accepted Answer

Depends: Depends on he anesthesia.  One component simply puts you to sleep, a different medicine paralyzed you.  They were probably simply light on the paralyzingly portion of the medicine.  This is normal practice for lightvanesthesia.

knee scope done under general anesthesia. waking up in recovery room i was  shivering and shaking. why does that happen? have very sore muscles now.

GA: Shivering and shaking is quite common after an operation and its due to body temp changes. This can also happen after a GA. The muscle pains are probably due to the use of  succinylcholine - which is a paralyzing agent - you would have to check your records. The muscle pains will resolve.

i have a cold on that day of wisdom teeth extraction and immediately feel nausea, vomited after waking up from anesthesia. how long gut muscles heal?

Side effect: Vomiting may be due to virus or meds side effect. No damage to jut muscles. Ask oral surgeon about vomiting. Meds are often prescribed. Take narcotic pain meds with food on stomach to minimize nausea from pain meds.

does pain killer and muscle relaxer medications react to anesthesia after 24 hours of back surgery? i took hydrocodine/acetaminophen 5-325 tb & tizanidine on the second day after surgery then after 1 hour i felt dizzy and fainted twice?

Accepted Answer

: The effect of the anesthesia should be fully gone by 24 hrs.  The post-op meds may have exacerbated a blood pressure drop which caused syncope, and the effect of the two is additive.  Discuss this with your doctor, so that meds can be properly adjusted for your needs.

i a couple times a week get a fluttery/spasamy feeling right in between my breast bones. i recently had surgery which my doctor said would of shown if there was any issues with my heart while under anesthesia. possibly muscle? or heart related?

Need to see a cardio: you may have what we call palpitation
so best would be to see cardiologist and get  holter monitor

Muscle pain: pain can be relieved with medications like paracetamol and burden provided you are not allergic to them.

Accepted Answer

Rest, ice : I would rest and allow the injury to heal
the best treatment would be ice, nsaids
and avoidance of any exacerbating 
activities.
If symptoms persist, you should be
evaluated.
