Depends on treatment: Ganglions are very common & often asymptomatic unless they exert pressure on a tendon, nerve or interfere with joint motion.  Observation (ignoring), compression technique (hit with bible), and even aspiration can have a high persistence/recurrence rate &gt; 80%.  Surgical excision can have a &lt;15% recurrence rate that can be even lowered with casting, which may require 2-3 weeks off depending on job.

Fluid sack off joint: Joints are held together by ligaments and capsular tissue. These structures provide stability for the joint and keep the synovial fluid in place.  Sometimes a small opening will develope in the capsule/ligament complex, allowing fluid to escape the joint. The body walls this fluid off in a membranous cyst.  They get bigger and smaller because the communicate with the joint. They are often painless.

Sometimes: Ganglion cysts can fluctuate in size and appear to have resolved. Sometimes they have decreased in size yet can still cause pain. Other times they may not cause any pain at all and subsequently may not require treatment.

Wrists, ankles, feet: Ganglions are benign outpouches of joint fluid usually found on the wrists , feet and ankles, where there is a lot of repetitive stress and motion.  (they can be found elsewhere also).  Hey are usually soft, gelly -like in consistency.  When drained, ganglion fluid is a yellow - clear thick liquid that looks like honey. Many other lumps can grow in these regions so get checked out.

Sack of fluid: A ganglion cyst is a sack of fluid, usually from a joint capsule or tendon sheath. These are benign growths that rarely cause pain. Initial treatment is with ice, immobilization and nsaid's. Cysts that are still symptomatic after treatment or those that are very large can be surgically removed. This is called a ganglion cyst. They are usually painless and sometimes go away on their own. If it isn't bothering you then you likely don't need to do anything with it. If it is bothering you, see your doc about removing it.
