Inflamed tendon: Tendons run in sheaths, similar to the cables on a bicycle. Sometimes a minor trauma can cause the sheath to become inflamed and a small cyst can pop up. This is called a ganglion cyst. They are usually painless and sometimes go away on their own. If it isn't bothering you then you likely don't need to do anything with it. If it is bothering you, see your doc about removing it.

Pain in a joint : Can be an acute  process such as the injury or infection or gout or a chronically arthritic joint . While a ganglion many present near a joint that has injury or arthritis typically ganglions themselves are not painful unless they are very small. So there may be something called an occult or hidden ganglion.

Excision of cyst: Ganglion cysts can be associated with pain and are easily removed. Surgeons can remove them with an open or arthroscopic technique. I personally prefer an arthroscopic approach so i can also evaluate for other pathology. If the cyst is on the hand or wrist you can get an evaluation from a hand surgeon for further treatment options.

Splint, nsaid: Evaluaiton, xray, injection, drainage are par of a workup. Many cysts do not hurt so an xray of the joint may give information about this. A previous fracture, arthritis, inflammation, an old ligament injury, rheumaoid arthritis, all are associatred with ganglions or tenosynoival sacs of fluid. See a hand surgeon since it is irritating.

Yes: Exact cause of ganglions is not clear.  Most common around the wrist, they can occur at any joint.  These fluid filled cysts can come and go, by varying how much fluid they contain.  Sometimes they rupture on there own.  Even after surgery to remove them, they can come back. Recurrence rate after surgery is around 2-3%.

Draining a ganglion: Is simple if you are trained to do it . Don&#x27;t let the seemingly simple way in which an experienced  surgeon addresses these fool you.  Complications including infection, bleeding nerve and tendon irritation joint  swelling all can occur if you don&#x27;t know what you are doing. Better not to rely on luck and let it be a simple procedure in the hands of someone skilled.
