i had a mucocele/ mucus retention cyst surgery on my lower lip 3 days ago. was wondering when it is safe to have a cigarette? is it also safe to take multi vitamins to help healing?

Wait!: It takes seven to ten days for wounds to close, and you should be as gentle as possible to the area. There is no question that having the correct vitamins helps healing. However, why not use this as an opportunity to stop smoking.  I can not stress firmly enough what a terrible habit it is.

There : There are two issues here to consider, one the effect of smoking on recovery from surgery and the other the effect of the drug, marijuana itself. Marijuana contains chemicals called cannabinoids that affect the central nervous system.

Smoking affects the ability of the lungs to oxygenate and clear particles and mucous from the lungs.  In general, for an elective procedure, surgeons recommend to stop smoking a week before surgery to allow the lungs to recover from the effects of smoking.

Cannabinoids tends to interact with a number of medications generally decreasing their effects when combined with anesthetic agens and other medications during and after surgery.

Stop using marijuana at least 1-2 weeks before a scheduled surgery.

No: A visit to the doctor can help, especially if the doctor knows of successful rehab centers or addiction-medicine specialists, both of which may be helpful to a marijuana user wanting to go cold turkey (stop all use at once). For users with good planning skills and willpower, they can cut out a portion of their use (such as 1/3 or 1/2) every couple of weeks or so, and eventually get to zero use.

Avoid marijuana: Smoking (inhaling smoke, which is full of lung irritants and cancer-causing chemicals) of any kind is unhealthy. We humans are not designed to inhale the byproducts of burning organic materials and whatever other chemical additives are mixed in with the plant materials. Avoid intentionally inhaling burning materials. It's just a bad idea, and not healthy for the body.

Seriously, YES: Besides the obvious answer that long term marijuana use can be harmful, more importantly you are going to have general anesthesia.  General anesthesia has profound effects on the body and all the anesthesiologists i know would cancel your surgery if you were still smoking "weed" as would i.  Adding another dangerous drug to the mix of medications given during anesthesia is just plain silly.

Perhaps: Thc is a known pain reliever.  However why would you want to use this.  Onset and offset of clinical effect is hard to predict,  ability to think clearly is impaired.  It is less effective than approved pain meds.  And, if you are already a steady marijuana user, you will have less benefit.
