MR Arthrography: MR Arthrography is performed to determine whether you have a tear in the labrum (the cartilage that covers the shoulder "socket"), sometimes called a SLAP lesion. After numbing the skin, the radiologist will place a needle into the shoulder under X-ray guidance and inject contrast under X-ray to confirm the medication is flowing into the shoulder capsule. This procedure is not usually very painful

Depends on diagnosis: Usually MRI scans of the spine and joints (shoulder, knees, etc) do not need a contrast injection.  Contrast is given for spine MRI scans to search for tumors and postoperative scarring. Mri scans of the brain, abdomen, pelvis can be performed with a contrast injection to help find a tumor, but these scans can also be performed without injection.  Breast MRI should be performed with contrast.

Not before ...: However, depending on the reason for the scan, a contrast agent may need to be injected into a vein in the arm about 2/3 the way through the test.

These post contrast images show how blood flows to different parts of the scanned area.  Contrast is more often used for head, heart, abdomen and pelvis scans, and rarely used for musculoskeletal (knee, shoulder, etc) and spine scans.

MRI scan length: The MRI can take between 20 minutes and 1 hour, depending on the body part. It can take longer if there is any motion, so try to stay still. Leave time for filling out paper work and getting dressed for the scan as well.
