Very possibly...: but I think you should get an expert opinion.  I would advise you have your physician examine them and confirm your assessment that these lymph nodes are benign.  Then you can agree together on whether it is safe for you to self-monitor them, or if she/he wants you to return for a recheck just to make sure all remains stable/benign. Good wishes:)

Yes: These are typical sites for lymph nodes.  Sometimes you can feel them and sometimes you cannot.

can thyroid disease cause very small (under 1cm) shotty, movable, lymph nodes in neck & armpits?  is it normal to feel these, especially if skinny?

Surprising answer: I have seen many children witrh what used to be acceptable as "growing pains". They are caused by inefficient metabolism in the tissues of a rapidly growing child and it is a reflection of empty calories inducing relative vitamin deficiency----hence they really are "growing pains"!  they do  respond to appropriate diet and vitamin supplements. Lymph nodes: You cannot determine the cause of an abnormal lymph nodes swollen by feeling the lymph node. Depending on your other symptoms a lymph node biopsy may be indicated.

Neck masses: Other than lymph nodes in neck are commonly thyroid nodules, branchial cleft cysts, lipomas.  If you can feel these masses in your neck, have your doctor order a ct or mri.  Ultrasound is particularly good at telling whether a mass is solid or cystic, not hard or soft.

Submental ?: Lymphatic system absorbs/carries things too big to go into the arteries/veins like bacteria eaten by white cells and digested food. Lymph nodes "taste" the lymph for anything bad  like bacteria/viruses/cancers, etc. When it detects a problem, it alerts the immune system and your body reacts.  They enlarge in response to the inflammation they create when they react.  They shrink when all is well.
