a very painful mouth ulcer inside my left cheek has led to swelling and pain in my lower left jaw. it hurts to talk, eat, even sleep. is this normal?

Worsening ulcer: Greetings. A worsening mouth ulcer possibly extending to the jaw needs to be looked at and biopsies. I'm not sure if you smoke or use alcohol but oral cancers are on the rise. A painful enlarging oral ulcer needs evaluation and SOON.

i am 9wks pregnant and have a canker sore/mouth ulcer on the inside of my cheeck and it is really sore. what can i do to stop the pain/get it better soon? my jaw is also sore now and the glands below my jaw heavily swollen.

Canker Sore: May or may not be a canker sore, especially if it has been there for longer than 2 weeks.  Best to see your General Dentist for examination/evaluation/treatment plan.  Make sure to inform your Dentist that you are pregnant (congratulations).  If necessary your Dentist will confer with your OBGyn.  In the meantime an OTC like Orabase is relatively innocuous.

See a doctor: You need to see your family doctor or an  ENT asap and if they don't find anything your next stop should be at your dentist. Do not wait.  See a doctor immediately.

Treatment: You can gargle the mouth with listerine few times a day , and it will help to resolve this condition.

Doctor can evaluate: Throat symptoms can be from a strep infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold or the flu (antibiotics usually not needed), or from another cause such as allergies, irritants, other viruses, etc... A person may see a doctor if throat symptoms are bothersome, recurrent, or don't go away quickly. One's doctor can examine. Of course, having the flu does not mean a person cannot catch something else.

Nerve endings: The mouth has a highly dense area of sensory nerve receptors for pain in the tissue and when you have an ulcer they are exposed and can be stimulated easily.

It will probably hur: Hot will probably irritate more. Try putting ice or a topical medicine like ambesol.  If it does not hey better with conservative measures, go see an ENT specialist who can probably prescribe something for you.

See your doctor: See your doctor.  He/she will listen to you, examine you and possibly do some tests.  He/she will probably prescribe medication for pain, physical therapy for exercises and stretching and possibly a referral for surgical intervention.
