Yes: Many people will get this in childhood as a simple flu like illness and never be sick enough to seek care. If an adult is not immune, they can get it and usually have a more intense experience with it. Often they can be quite ill for up to 3 weeks and a few are ill for 3 months.

Got EBV as a child?: In many parts of the world, children catch ebv virus when they are still young. At that age, they get mild flu-like symptoms for a few days, and then are well again (they usually do not get a "mono" illness). Because their bodies already carry ebv virus, when they become teens or adults and kiss other people with ebv virus, they do not catch another ebv disease from the other people.

How sure is the dx?: Reactivated mononucleosis is unusual.  Most cases of mono are caused by EBV but CMV also can cause.  While exceptions exist, usually mononucleosis confers lifelong immunity.  Serologies are often used to check, however remain positive after acquiring the infection even many years.  The monospot (EBV) is usually only positive for 3-5months p. infx.  Other things can cause mono-like syndrome.

Different: They are drastically different viruses. They have different target tissues and different modes of transmission. You get genital herpes from sexual intercourse with someone with genital herpes of receiving oral sex from someone with a cold sore. Almost everyone has had mono by the teen years if not earlier. Thankfully most do not get genital herpes,ever.

Could be: Mono or some other virus, or even a bacteria.  See a doc or other provider.  You may need some labs.  Or, if the symptoms have only been there a couple days, maybe you just need to rest and wait and you will feel better soon.

Mononucleosis: If you have mono hydrate well, rest, use nsaid’s or tylenol (acetaminophen) for pain/ fever, gargle with warm salt water if your throat is sore ; avoid contact sports if your spleen is enlarged.

Varies: Mononucleosis is a viral illness.  It can last from a few days to several weeks to months.  Rest, nutrition, and time are necessary for treatment.  One can have a mild case or a more severe case to include a hepatitis.  If not progressing, please follow up with your pcp or an infectious disease doctor.
