Low risk: As long as the atypical nevus was excised with negative margins (normal skin at all edges), then you should be fine.  Lower your risk of developing a new problem somewhere else by avoiding excessive sun exposure, or by using frequent applications of sunscreen if you must be out in the sun.

Skin cancer : Most skin cancers are the result of excessive sun exposure/tanning.  Genetics play a strong role too.  Any skin lesion that is changing size, color, shape  or an area that does not heal is suspicious for skin cancer and should be evaluated by a dermatologist .  Moles with jagged borders, various colors (brown, black, sometimes red) ,  asymmetrical , bigger than pencil head eraser are suspicious.

Yes and no: I have always said to patients that any mole that changes character and the DX is not clear cut is better in a jar than on your body.  A lot of these moles never cause problems but the danger of a changing mole is considered dangerous.  Your family doc is best to decide!  never take these changing moles for granted without having checked!

IT IS NOT A BAD SIGN.
THE CHANCES ARE IT IS BENIGN, BUT YOUR DOCTOR WANTS TO BE CERTAIN.
I AM SURE SHE MEASURED IT, MAYBE TOOK A PHOTO.
DONT FRET ABOUT IT.

Information: Any change in the appearance of a spot that has been present for a while. For moles , darkening of the color,  recent increase in size, irregular borders, dark black color. Sometimes central ulceration.

Change : Any changing pigmented mole or freckle should be examined by a dermatologist for the possibility of skin cancer.

See a dermatologist: I am always concerned about skin lesions and moles that are 1) black, grey, or blue, 2) made up of many colors, 3) have irregular borders, or are bigger than the size of a pencil eraser. I am also concerned about moles that itch or bleed spontaneously. Please have yourself checked by your doctor; a dermatology evaluation may be in order.

Likely so: Do not obsess over the mole. If it increases to twice its size, bleeds, develops a nodule or changes color, see a doctor.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low fat milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex.

ive had an atypical mole for years, and it has stayed the same size/color and irregular shape. never showing signs of changing. what signs should i be on alert for in regards to melanoma? especially considering it fits the asymmetrical symptom?

: Has a dermatologist examined this lesion and advised you about proper follow-up?  If not, I strongly recommend that you consult one. Melanomas are every tricky for physicians and,at times, for the dermatologist. I have even seen dermatologists miss the diagnosis. So stay vigilant and get evaluation &amp; advice from a specialist especially for an unusual appearing skin lesion.
