Pain : Pain like the type that you have described can be coming from a number of different problems. Your tooth may be fractured, your filling may be fractured, the filling can be loose.
The nerve in the tooth may have died from a deep cavity or a deep restoration or from trauma from your occlusion.

Diagnosing this problem, as you can see, is best done by a dentist with a radiograph, who can physically see the tooth, test it for vitality, and check your bone for any sign of infection.

I can be something very simple to correct, or it can be complex. In either way, you should make an appointment to prevent your problem from becoming a severe emergency, since in the end you will still have to see a dentist for treatment.

Possible, not likely: Staph (whether MRSA or non-MRSA types) is not a common cause of dental abscesses, although it could happen. All abscess symptoms are pretty much the same, no matter what bacteria are involved:  swelling, pain, redness, and potentially draining pus. Discuss with your dentist and follow her advice if antibiotic treatment is prescribed.

Call your dentist: The only way to cure a periodontal (gum) abscess is with dental treatment. The first step of treatment is to drain all pus that has accumulated in the abscess. The deep cleaning will be required for the gum pocket and cause of the infection should be removed.

Hopefully never1: A tooth will not abcess just because you touched the exposed tooth with your tongue. If you needed a crown, then there is obviously a lot of damage to the tooth and that can lead to further complications. Contact your dentist and he/she will be happy to explain your specific situation.

Non-vital tooth: If the nerve in your tooth has died, then you're right, those are your only two options. Both are safe. Always best to save a tooth that can be saved.

ABSOLUTELY!: Yes, have her seen by a Pedodontist asap as all infections can spread and cause serious problems. Even in the absence of pain it can spread and cause more swelling, pain and other problems. Do not wait. Have her seen asap.
