Comcermnng: Miralax (polyethylene glycol)  and other agents used for constipation should not cause pencil thin stools. I am concerned that you are requiring daily constipation medications. You need to see a gastroenterologist who then may proceed with a colonoscopy to make sure you have nothing in your colon that is causing the thin stool and you then need to discuss the issue of constipation.  Please proceed with the GI physician

Oh my...: Before you contemplate long term laxative use, seek medical evaluation--rule out metabolic causes of constipation (e.g. Low thyroid or adrenal conditions), distinguish slow versus normal transit constipation, consider a primary rectal dysfunction that may be treatable with biofeedback, check for structural pathology or extrinsic impingement, or intermittent ileus (e.g. Pseudo-obstruction).

i've tried linzess trulance miralax psyllium and other fiber supplements diets my stool is still pencil thin. is triphala safe?

Safe enough: Triphala is an herbal formula used in Aruvedic medicine often for bowel problems/relief of constipation. It consists of at least three plants; it is not clear what chemical is responsible for it's effects. I would be more skeptical that it would provide any benefit for you, if the other things you list have not,more than I would be worried it was unsafe. You could try it without expecting too much

had tiny thin stools for a few days followed by constipation happening right now, took miralax and saw greenish black little specks/chunks in my stool, im terrified right now, is this a sign of colon cancer? there was no blood or mucus?

Constipation: Colon cancer would be unusual in your age bracket. Blood in stool and change in bowel habits are 2 common symptoms of it. Greenish black specks are nonspecific. To treat constipation, increase both fluid and fiber intake(can also take fiber supplement like Metamucil) in your diet. Try to avoid laxatives.  If not improved, consult a gastroenterologist for evaluation and advice.

will miralax soften stool that is already hard, or does it only work on "new" stool?

Depends: some stool is so hard the miralx and fluid you drink will find it hard to penetrate.  That stool needs to pass.  Other, softer stool will become loosened by the miralax/water solution and become softer.  If hard stool not passing could try mineral oil or enemas form below

Indefinitely: There is no harm in using these as long as you need them. Make sure to drink plenty of water to help them work.

Accepted Answer

: Yes. It is an agent that traps water &amp; bonds to it tightly. This property helps it soften stools that would otherwise dry out. When used in a quantity above that needed for soft stools they will become loose/mushy.
