You : You can wait to see your doctor, but in the meantime definitely use condoms for protection from pregnancy.  Your doctor can perform a pelvic exam and possibly an ultrasound to be sure your Mirena (levonorgestrel) is still in place.  You are right, the Mirena (levonorgestrel) can be expelled, and though this is rare it can definitely happen.

Strings : It's normal to feel strings since they hang out if the cervix at the back of the vagina. You should not feel plastic or anything sharp. Expulsion risk is 1/1760 so rare but not impossible. I'm sure your doc would be happy to verify its in place for you.

Difficult to say: Conception occurs within day or so of the sex. It takes about 3 weeks for the embryo to make enough HCG for a positive pregnancy test. Blood test may be done a day after a missed period. Home pregnancy tests should be done 4-5 days after the missed period. If the result is negative repeat the test in 4-5 days. Use first morning urine and follow instructions for the test carefully.

Temporary menstrual cycle disruption is common in the first few days after an IUD removal.: Your body quickly returns to it's normal baseline. The first cycle usually occurs 1-5 weeks after iud removal. Fertility resumes almost immediately. There are multiple options for heavy periods. Hormonal treatments such as birth control pills and nonhormonal options such as Lysteda can be helpful.

Very unlikely: The iud has been known to move to hide the strings, perforate and move into the belly, and even fall out at times but it is very uncommon. Specifically from sex it would be unusual to say the least.

Mirena IUD: Some patients experience mild cramping in the first few hours after Mirena insertion. Ibuprofen is typically sufficient to provide relief. Most are pain free soon after insertion.

It is safe: It is safe to use a pill and the Mirena at the same time. It will not mix anything up. Many women actually choose to do this because they like the superior contraceptive effect of the Mirena, but use the pill to help their skin. It is totally safe to do so!

Diet/exercise: Mirena can cause weight gain due to hormonal effectis. Cut out carbs, cross train and reduce portions to 5 small meals/day.

Doubt it: Many GPs will have both the training &amp; experience to remove an IUD. A call to the office nurse may clarify if such procedures are part of the care offered. Some may defer this when it is not a practice common in the region.
