very good evening and happy july 4th weekend doctors. for occasional constipation can you alternate between miralax and another laxative like dulcolax or is dulcolax too strong to use on an intermittent basis?

: These laxatives work by different mechanisms and can be alternated. Dulcolax is a bowel stimulant and I think is too strong for frequent use. However, if you're experiencing a change in bowel habits instead of very occasional uncomfortable constipation, it calls for an investigation including colonoscopy. : They work by a different mechanism. The MiraLAX binds to water and prevents its extraction by the large bowel, leading to softer stools. The other meds act as stimulants pushing stool along. Use what you wish, but many do better staying with one product than switching.

You could: You could continue taking Miralax (polyethylene glycol) and drink enough water so that your urine is colorless. You could try a fiber laxative like Metamucil. Best would to be increase your intake of fiber in food. Consult this site for more info.

: Miralax is polyethylene glycol, otherwise used as an antifreeze.  Used as directed it is very safe.  If after 48 hours you have not had a BM, consider seeing your physician.

: Yes.  However, they basically do the same thing.  They both cause the bowels to add water to the stool in order to soften it.  Used in combination, it could lead to diarrhea.

Basics: this is a product that works by binding water molecules to its material &amp; not allowing the intestines to extract them as they move through the gut.By mixing with the other digestive debris it keeps poop soft &amp; plyable so you can pass softer stools. How fast you drink it makes no difference in how it works. It often takes 3-4 days for a dose to work through &amp; out of your gut.

:  No, it is not ok to take these two laxatives together.  When taken simultaneously the risk of gastrointestinal side effects such as ischemic (lack of blood) colitis and ulceration of the colon , though rare, may occur. 
It is always wise the first examine your diet as a cause of constipation.  If this is not effective, contact your physician before self treatment
