is taking expired milk of magnesia (magnesium hydroxide) safe? i just took a dosage of this, for chronic constipation. realized after that it expired in 1991. am i ok?

Expired medications: Medications that are passed their expiration dates can be less effective or contaminated.  Some medications could even decompose into products that can be harmful.  It isn't worth the risk to take expired medications, so regularly clear out your medicine cabinet and replace with fresh medications.  One dose is likely not going to be dangerous, but call your doctor or poison control if you get sick

She constipated?: What's the reason?  Is she constipated or trying to get more magnesium?   Certainly this is not the best way to manage chronic constipation.   If you tend to get constipated, try eating more fiber and exercising regularly .  If the problem persists, see the GI doctor.

Well : General over-the-counter medications that are expired are still effective for your two if not exposed to excess heat moisture  or  excess cold

i am little consipated. i took 1 tbsp of milk of magnesia around 5 pm yesterday. its 12 pm and i have only gone little pieces. should i take another dose of mom or just try a dose of miralax in juice? thank you . i take iron supplement?

: You may take Miralax and drink plenty of water. Iron supplements are known to cause constipation. You may take a fiber laxative like Metamucil and drink enough water daily so that your urine is colorless. Try to increase your intake of fiber foods. Consult this site for fiber foods.

i (21f) woke up unable to pass a large hard stool and took milk of magnesia (30ml dose on bottle) to soften it, was that a bad idea? it started with a couple soft stools but then constant watery crampy stools all day long after, should i see doctor?

: Milk of Mag is a laxative, not a stool softener. Laxatives stimulate peristalsis, the rhythmic squeezing, and relaxation of the muscles in the intestinal wall that propel the contents along. It is also the source of cramping. If your original problem wasn't due to a stomach bug then the effects of 30 ml of MOM will pass soon enough. Its important to drink tons of water to keep up with the diarrhea

Sure, sort of...: Each person with constipation needs to work with her doctor to figure out the cause and the solution. Otherwise if the constipation does not resolve, and the patient has to use something daily to move poop along, and happens to use MOM for that daily purpose, it will appear as though she is dependent on MOM. Some people use different meds on different days. Doctor has prescription meds too.

Yes but . . .: www.epocrates.com doesn't show any significant interactions between milk of magnesia (magnesium hydroxide) and Lorazepam but you really ought to address this w/your family doc and/or whoever prescribed your lorazepam. It's imperative that your docs know everything you're taking, even if an over-the-counter dietary supplement or a prescription medication from another doc.

Probably : If overdosed and used extensively, can cause dehydration which in turn can cause exhaustion. Hold it for now,  if still having symptoms or symptoms are severe, go to urgent care or ER, wish you wellness
