May be may be not: Multiple joint pain inflammation may be related to an underlying auto immune arteritis or totally independent factors causing pain in different joints. Certain blood tests may help to determine , mist if the time treatment may be the same, antiinfalmatory , physical therapy, posture and life style modification

what does degenerative arthritis in hands feel like?

Stiffness: Is the most common complaint. Pain is usually bimodal meaning worse in the am and then later in the day. Pain should improve in the am within 30 min or so as the hands and fingers are used.  If the pain and stiffness lasts longer than 30-60 min then this can be a sign of rheumatoid arthritis which is more severe and should be treated sooner than later.  Discuss this with your pcp.

Not very: Spine surgery for ddd alone, is rarely indicated. Now, if your ddd is associated with spinal stenosis, pinched nerves, scoliosis, spondylolisthesis, then results are much better. Understand, what caused ddd in the affected disk is present in all of them. So fix one, and nothing to prevent recurrence. That is why spine surgery gets such a bad rap—it is not a preventative for other problems.

Usual activities: It's a bit unusual to have degenerative arthritis of the neck at such a young age so you should have the diagnosis checked. Beyond that, if you don't have symptoms, you should mostly carry on with your usual activities. If you are having pain however you may require activity modification and possibly some physical therapy and oral pain medications. Speak with a physiatrist or orthopedist.

There are a lot: It depends on what symptoms are you experiencing in your neck and back. Conservative treatments like nsaids, acetaminophen, topical medications, physical therapy are examples. If you are experiencing pain that radiates to your extremities from your neck and back. Then  a more aggressive approach is in order. Assuming you do not have surgical indications, interventional pain procedures could help.

Trauma or not: Both are forms of joint degeneration.  In traumatic arthritis there is an identified injury to the joint which leads to the degeneration.  In degenerative arthritis there is no injury identified that leads to the arthritis.  In that situation there are dozens and dozens of possible causes for the degeneration.
