These can become enlarged over time with degenerative arthritis or following trauma. Eventually the space between the vertebrae becomes narrowed and pain sensitve structures like spinal nerves get pinched.

Diagnosis critical: There don't seem to be many physicians who have skills in diagnosing back disease.  Some rheumatologists and some physiatrists and some orthopedic surgeons, but the findings you describe are probably not the cause or related to the pain.

It is normal for age: It is unfortunate that they use the word disease to describe the mild changes of your lumbar and thoracic spine.  I never see a MRI report that is interpreted completely as normal.  This result would have to be considered in the context of your symptoms.  We dont treat mri's, we treat symptoms. Significant?: Studies were done where individuals with no back complaints received MRI's. By age 30, 30 to 40 percent of the MRI's showed abnormalities such as disc space narrowing. The percentage increased with age. Sclerosis and spurring might be indications of more issues. In other words, don't base your situation strictly on the imaging. You need competent evaluation including physical exam and history.

Mild degenerative disc disease can manifest in different ways. Based on the fact that it is mild, it is unlikely to cause symptoms that are severe enough for disability. However disability is determined by the patient's ability to perform activities and work. Determination of disability requires evaluation by your doctor.

If you mean what's this, it is degenerative disk disease of the neck, more noticeable at the levels C-3, and all levels down to C-6-7.treatment is driven by your symptoms. See a fellowship trained spine surgeon, my preference is an orthopedic surgeon though neurosurgeons have the same programs to complete to be so trained.

Arthritis : Multiple level degenerative disc disease is another way to say you have developed some degenerative arthritis in your neck.  If your pain is severe, or associated with symptoms that run down the arm, you may want to consider getting an MRI, which is a much more sensitive test to pick up causes of pain than an xray because it also shows soft tissue structures such as the discs, nerves, and cord.

Osteoarthritis: As we age, the discs in our spine degenerate, meaning they lose water, elasticity, and can weaken. A disc coming apart is called disc herniation and can cause pressure on nearby nerves (this produces radiculopathy when symptoms like numbness and weakness occur from the nerve irritation or injury). Mild degenerative disc disease means the disc has mild signs of aging but not effecting nerves.

Could mean 3: The word should you use could describe up to three nerves involved. Depending on the specifics , that could be three nerves with branches on each side for a total of six. It could also mean central stenosis involving the entire spinal cord. The findings on the films need to be matched up with your physical findings for an accurate determination. The Doctor Who ordered the study should be able to explain that to you.
