Unrelated: Metronidazole is not likely to be producing vaginal spotting.  Best thing to do is to see a gynecologist and find out what is really going on.

Not from the drug: Metronidazole doesn't do this. Neither does BV itself. However, BV often accompanies other conditions that could cause vaginal bleeding, such as STDs (e.g. gonorrhea, chlamydia), cervicitis, pre-cancerous changes due to HPV, and others. Discuss with with the clinic or doctor who diagnosed and treated your BV. Good luck!

More info: I really need to know what other meds you're taking and whether you have been examined for a variety of problems, including STDs.  The short answer is, no, this is not normal; but it doesn't necessarily mean anything is bad or terrible.

Metronida. likely ok: The current thinking is that except for rifampin, other commonly-used antibiotics (like metronidazole and many others) do not alter the effectiveness of birth control pills. This is likely presuming a person is not sick with vomiting or rapid diarrhea, or some other condition that decreases the absorption of a swallowed pill. i am 9 weeks preg. i hav bacterial vaginosis.the gp prescribed me oral metronidazole 500mg 2x a day for 7 days. is ot really safe?i have spotting too

Not in 1st trimester: Flagyl is safe in pregnancy except for the 1st trimester (1-14 weeks) when there is a slight risk to the pregnancy. Speak to your doctor, you might be able to switch to a vaginal gel (metronidazole gel) instead of the oral form. However, bacterial vaginosis also causes an increased risk of miscarriage, so make sure this is treated.

i was diagnosed with bv (prescribed flagyl) on 6/10 and my cycle came as usual 6/12 - 6/18. 6/26, heavy brown spotting, enough for pad. what is this?

Old blood: mixed with mucous, vaginal/cervical secretions mixed with bacterial discharge: all normal.

Either: The only way to know if you are pregnant is to take a pregnancy test.  The ones you can buy at the pharmacy work very reliably!  a vaginal infection can cause some spotting, but why not take the test to be sure.

Probably not: At present Metronidazole has not been asociated with congenital anomalies.
