Pulse and bp vs bp: In simplest terms...Metoprolol lowers blood pressure and heart rate by counteracting effects of adrenaline. Amlodipine lower bp without affecting heart rate by relaxing smooth muscle in blood vessels and dilating them.

: Yes but try to separate them by 1-2 hours so the ExLax does not bind to and interfere with the absorption of the metoprolol and amlodipine (not reported, but not tested - so nobody really knows)

BP control. : Both of those medications work to lower the blood pressure. Smoking cigarettes raises your blood pressure. The risk of taking both medications together would be lowering your blood pressure too much.

my htn meds are metoprolol 50mg and amlodipine 2.5mg taken daily. the meds don't take effect for about 3 or 4 hours and then may be effective for about 12-15 hours before bp goes back up. are these meds effective?

: In order to answer your question, you need to see a doctor in person. In general, metoprolol is used for pt with heart arrhythmia after having a heart attack or having congestive heart failure. In general, without those conditions.  it is not very clinically effective for hypertension. Amlodipine 2.5 mg, is the lowest dose which I rarely use. I do like to use amlodipine at higher doses.

my mom is on metoprolol 60mg and amlodipine 5mg and she is retaining so much fluids (not on lasix). what should she do?

HTN and edema: Please check the dosage of her metoprolol (usually  25, 50, 100 mg pills). She is currently on beta blocker and a calcium channel blocker and has edema. Did she have edema before amlodipine was started?  Leg edema can be seen in some patients who takes amlodipine.  If her BP is well controlled, one can consider stopping it.  Otherwise, a trial with a diuretic (furosemide or HCTZ) can be tried.

Possibly change meds: Amlodipine frequently causes fluid retention and may be the cause of the swelling. Additionally h the blood pressure may not be adequately controlled on the two medications and this could cause decreased cardiac output with fluid retention and lung congestion. Would suggest that the Amlodipine be changed to a different antihypertensive vasodilator, possibly and ACE inhibitor of ARB.

Check dose w/doctor: You would want to check first with your internist (or whoever has prescribed your anti-hypertensive medicines) about the dosages.  Adjustments may need to be made.

Not that I can find: After a pretty extensive search, I cannot find any combo pill here the the states with Metoprolol and Amlodipine together.  Sorry!
