No: It is not recommended to use immunotherapy for treatment of food allergy.  There are studies being done to try to desensitize by giving small amounts of the food frequently but these are still in a research phase.  Anti-ige treatment with omulazimab is approve for asthma treatment in the us and it will often make the patient less reactive to foods they are allergic to.

Complex answer: Allergy vaccine therapy (ait) is a very complex immunologic treatment. Basically what ait does is stops one's body from seeing an allergen as an allergen. The result is less allergy antibody production and less symptoms. The immunology of this is very complex and fills textbooks.

Mechanism: It changes the regulating mechanism of the immune system to lower the specific types of ige antibodies and raising the igg4 antibodies. Allergy patient usually (90%) have too much ige antibodies which combine with the allergic protein and after bridging on a mast cell, a chemical reaction is produced resulting in your symptoms.

i've read there are pills to reduce seasonal allergies (sublingual immuno-therapy (slit), is this available yet, and why hasnt it replaced injections?

Need more studies: Slit at this time has not been approved by fda, no established standard dosing, may not work usa because most patients have more than one allergen (grass, dust, tree) that they are allergic to and slit studies usually were with patients who were only allergic to single allergen(grass only). The protection of slit still hasn't been completely studied. Injections  is a better option at this point.

SLIT: Sublingual immunotherapy (allergy drops) is new compared to subcutaneous immunotherapy (allergy shots). Only a few grass pollens have been studied in the slit group. Both have been shown to be effective in treating hay fever symptoms. However, not much is known about the effectiveness of other allergens in the slit group. A much higher dose of allergens are required in slit to induce tolerance.

Shellfish & Iodine : Shellfish allergy is a sensitivity to one ir more proteins. Iodine is an element and not large enough to be an allergen. Shellfish allergy and radiocontrast media (rcm) sensitivity have nothing to do with each other, "old wives tale". Rcm sensitivity is due to the hyper-osmolarity of the rcm's effect on basiphiic mediator release. Neither related to thyroid medication intolerance, .

i may need cephalosporin therapy with a suspected penicillin allergy.  how does it work?  do i take a 3rd generation by mouth and sit in an er waiting room with a buddy and an epipen (epinephrine)?

Don't overreact: Allergies to cephalosporins are very rare, even in people with penicillin allergy. I doubt it is necessary to stay in an emergency room or even a doctor's office, or to have an WpiPen at hand. Discuss with the doctor prescribing the antibiotic.

In the arm: Like most injections/vaccinations, these are given in the upper arm.  Allergy shots can take up to 2 years to become effective.  Allergy therapy is also given as a liquid administered under the tongue.
