Basics: Constipation occurs when stool emptying is not frequent enough or complete enough for stored stool not to dry excessively in the colon. If you increase stooling frequency it may resolve, but assistance with gentile agents like Miralax can help. Miralax granules when added to water retains it tightly for its duration in the body, softening poop.

i was diagnosed with ida 3 months ago. had an iron infusion.  had constipation for two weeks. found relief by taking metamucil.  i am not constipated any more but notice maroon stools and blood. pain on right side of abdomen?

Go see your doctor: Because you live in australia, i don't know what's available over there with(out) a prescription so best to go see your doctor (who can also check for hypothyroidism). Avoid older antihistamines which can lead to constipation & urinary retention. Lots of different laxatives. Consider polyethylene glycol (available here in states w/o prescription), magnesium citrate, lactulose, senna, etc.

Try something else: Use MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) one capful a day, never fails, and increase your water intake to 8 glasses a day.

Depends: the answer depends on your bowel movements- If they are easy to pass and you are taking the medication every other day, then that should suffice. If you have difficult to pass stools, you may need the medication daily.

Fiber in Diet: Check w/ doctor for underlying causes. Metamucil is  Psyllium, a type of water soluble fiber. 2-3 servings of Metamucil gives you 6-15 grams (depending on form you use) Try fiber rich foods: whole-grain breads &amp; cereals,  apples, oranges, broccoli, cauliflower, berries, pears, Brussels sprouts, lettuce, figs, prunes, carrots, spinach, kale, brown rice, bran, etc. Add lots of water. Go slow first.

It can.: Metamucil is a dry fiber. It is recommended to take it with water. If not enough water is taken the fiber will firm up and can constipate.

Its not : Supposed to. You should be taking about 20-30 gms a day. If you are not tolerating it well you can switch to another brand such as citrucel or konsyl. You can also take a stool softener and keep in mind to drink a lot of fluids, specially in this warm weather. If symptoms dont improve talk to your family doc as you may need workup to rule out other causes of constipation.
