Examination: The increased color and distribution are the criteria for melasma. A special ultraviolet light, woods lamp, can help determine the depth of the pigment. Deeper pigment is more difficult but not impossible to treat. Blood tests or skin biopsy are not necessary for the diagnosis.

Yes...but...: Melasma is pigmentation of the skin due do hormonal fluctuations. The prescription lightening creams contain hydroquinone, which inhibit pigment production, allowing your body to metabolize the excess pigment.  However, this medication does not alter the underlying hormonal status.  So if one stops using it, the dyspigmentation will likely recur. The transient result also occur with laser and light devices.

A difficult problem : Melasma is one of the more difficult skin conditions to treat. There are skin lighteners, lasers and other topical treatments which can help lighten the skin overtime. However, effects of hormones and ultraviolet light are constantly working against you to lay pigment down in the skin. Whatever method you use, make sure you were wearing the highest SPF sunscreen every day.

: If you are asking what to do about it, stay out of the sun, apply a sunscreen lotion every morning, and apply a lightening cream at bedtime.  If that does to work, you will need to see a dermatologist for a prescription treatment.

So you do not have to worry about it provided it is not a Birth mark or a mole being there.

Avoid: I would not recommend it.  A safer choice would be azeleic acid which is completely safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
