i am currently taking doxycycline and just started a 10 day course of terbinafine for resistant ringworm. i am on vacation next week at the lake and planned on swimming. both of these meds say avoid sunlight. does this mean i should not swim?

: Both drugs can cause photosensitivity, i.e. increased sunburn with sun exposure. A strong sunblock (preferably SPF 30 or higher) usually prevents it. But still take it easy -- cover up as much as practical if sun exposure can't be entirely avoided.

i know that while taking vibramycin (doxycycline) i should avoid sun exposure..but when can i expose freely to sun after stopping the drug i.e.after how long?!

1 week: The half life of vibramycin (doxycycline) is 18 hours so it would be reasonable to be out of your system in 7 days. Good luck but still wear sun block.

Photosensitivity : Photosensitivity is a side effect commonly of amitriptyline. This is a sensitivity to light and you may sunburn easily. A rare side effect is hyperthermia and heat stroke. Amitriptyline boost norepinephrine levels which are involved in body temperature regulation. I would just wear sunscreen and stay hydrated if you have to be outside for long periods in a shady spot.

Elavil (amitriptyline) can make: you make you more sensitive to the sun. You should avoid prolonged sun exposure, tanning booths and sunlamps. Therefore you should wear sunscreen and protective clothing when in the sun.

Mgt: It is important to wear sunscreen.  If you experience worsening, a treatment plan can be developed.

Yes: A small percentage of patients can develop a photo toxic reaction to the sun with severe burning and blistering to exposed areas, especially hands and face.  Plus, no amount of sun is safe and if you are taking Doryx (doxycycline) for acne, the acne that resolves is going to want to tan 10x faster than normal skin and you will be left with brown polka dots on your face if you don't avoid the sun.

should i avoid sunlight when using aldara (imiquimod) even if it's only being applied to a small area of my finger?

: There is no need to avoid sun exposure. Keep the finger covered, but even that probably isn't necessary.

is phototherapy safe if i am on antibiotics? my antibiotics say to avoid direct sunlight.  does this mean that i should also avoid phototherapy?

No phototherapy: Yes, certain drugs are sun sensitive  such as sulfa drugs and can cause severe reactions phototherapy is mimicking direct sunlight so be careful.

Autoimmune: It sounds like good advice and also sounds like lupus might be a diagnosis they are considering.  You can get an evaluation by a good rheumatologist to answer more questions.

Yes: You can get sun burn.
